D32:Redcar Refuge
I never want things to go wrong, but when they do you need to seize the opportunity. This is not easy when you're relying on one brain cell.
The paddle to Redcar was tough, many hours into a cold blustery Headwind. I kept going as I badly needed a rest in a warm hotel bed and to buy a backup to replace my dead Pixel 8 Pro.
On arriving my remaining Pixel 8 Pro won't power on, no phone, no money, no hope.
After changing into dry clothes, out comes the Nokia emergency brick phone. Can I work out how to use the bloody thing, not really. The only number I can find is the fast dial that calls my dead Pixel.
Attracted by the beautiful Demelza, Muhammad and Aziz step onto the stage. M lends me his phone. I use messenger to contact all the members of my family. The profound lack of response deepens my sense of frustrated helplessness. I remember Email and dash out three garbled missives. My wife was visiting friends in Bath, Jon caught up the day after, Will my youngest after double checking what looked like a badly composed scam decided there was no risk in responding. I got him to buy me a phone in Argos for collection the next day.
M & A who had returned from their homes to pass on the message, know what it is like to be far from home and family with no roof for the night. M offers me his own bedroom and a shattered Mikey gratefully accepts.
I spent the day in Redcar setting up two cheap Motorola phones and literally walked many kilometres to get the Pixel return labels printed, it's less strenuous paddling. Why is there no Uber when you really need it.
By 10.30pm job done.
